Doc. | France/Austria 2007, 71 Min.
Zuoz is a journey into a universe cut off from the outside world: an exclusive boarding school high up in the Swiss mountains. We are captured in a maze of rooms and corridors, in which the residents walk around endlessly, with doors opening and revealing glimpses of their everyday lives.
Daniella Marxer's documentary shows the everyday world of the elegant and imposing boarding school Zuoz, where the heirs of rich and influential families are being groomed to eventually step into their parents shoes.
Being original is not tolerated and of no interest. We see a world of control that replaces thinking and emotion by rules of conduct, and these are celebrated every day and never challenged - they have become everyone's purpose in life - teachers' and students'. It's the community that counts and the system seems to work well: there are very few deviations from the rules, no rebellion at all, because if you don't adapt, you will be expelled immediately.
Zuoz is part of the touring film festival ueber Macht - Kontrolle, Regeln, Selbstbestimmung (thematic focus on control, rules and self-empowerment). For more information (in German) visit www.ueber-macht.de
