ONE WORLD

ONE WORLD Berlin 2004

After six successful editions in Prague, the One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival took place in Berlin for the first time.
One World Prague has built a solid reputation based on the quality of its programs and discussion atmosphere, and through the close cooperation it enjoys with other cultural and social initiatives in Prague. This good standing has attracted renowned partners and sponsors from political and corporate realms. One World 2004 Berlin Edition aims to follow in this tradition and realize the festival's mission in the capital city. Berlin is a city steeped in historical significance. It is a meeting place for many cultures and is a laboratory for various lifestyles, making it an especially suitable location.
One World Berlin Edition 2004 marked the subsequent annual editions in Berlin. The first year prsented 40 international programs on topical focal points such as Islam, minorities, growing up in peace, safety and tolerance, and two One World Berlin Edition spotlights: on the rights of people with disabilities and on pop music and human rights.
In addition to highlights from the Prague festival, One World Berlin Edition presents two program spotlights developed specifically for the Berlin Edition.
One spotlight focused on the debate concerning the passing of a UN Human Rights Convention which will secure the rights of people with disabilities. With a selection of documentaries by or about people with disabilities, along with discussions and events, One World Berlin Edition brought this debate to a wider audience by offering a platform for people with disabilities and by encouraging open encounters. Concurrently to the festival, a conference about a UN Human Rights Convention for the rights of people with disabilities was held in Berlin.
Another spotlight was on pop music and human rights. With many music labels moving to Berlin and the music trade fair Popkomm taking place for the first time in Berlin in 2004, One World Berlin examined another side of pop music – not as big business but as both a conduit of human rights and a form of expression enjoying basic rights.
The film and media programs seek to inform and offer possibilities for active involvement for human rights. The films and videos present a variety of cinematic approaches to human rights issues. The screenings are complemented by introductions and discussions with experts from human rights organizations as well as panels, concerts and workshops
ONE WORLD strives to provide the best possible accessibility of its venues and programs. By offering German subtitled version of foreign language entries and hard of hearing subtitling for selected German films, ONE WORLD demonstrates the festival's committment to barrier free access. Most venues are barrier free.
