WER SAGT DENN, DASS BETON NICHT BRENNT, HAST DU'S PROBIERT?

(WHO SAYS CONCRETE DOESN'T BURN, HAVE YOU TRIED IT?)-West Berlin in the 80s

presented and curated by Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek

Before post-reunification Berlin became a magnet for the music industry thanks to love and hate parades and dancing to electronic music in Temporary Autonomous Zones (and some vigorous marketing on the behalf of the city government), the Western part was home to myriad music scenes which were intertwined to varying degrees. In the early 80s, West Berlin was the scene of the 'Geniale Dilettanten' avantgarde 'movement' and the dark, nihilistic post-punk of the 'Berliner Krankheit' (Berlin malady) in which Einstürzende Neubauten, die Töfliche Doris, Malaria and many others were involved. At decade's end, Westbam and others paved the way for the triumph of techno, the Love Parade and the youth culture that evolved around them. What came in-between may no be as legendary, but it was no less prescient: Funpunk, Neo-Garage, Pop Revival, Proto-Crossover...
An audiovisual reminiscence with clips by Klaus Beyer, Depeche Mode, Einstürzende Neubauten, Wolfram Jacob (DJ-Mix: Westbam) and more.
